Kiki Bertens receives Wild Card UNICEF Open

Schiavone, Wickmayer and Ferrero are also playing at Rosmalen, in addition to Clijsters, Ferrer, Stosur, Haase and Krajicek

A number of interesting names have been added to the players’ list of the UNICEF Open, the international grass tennis tournament that takes place in Rosmalen from 17-23 June 2012.

After winning her first WTA-tournament, Kiki Bertens has received a Wild Card for the main tournament. UNICEF Open-finalist and winner of Roland Garros Francesca Schiavone will also join in, as well as Dominika Cibulkova, Maria Kirilenko, Yanina Wickmayer and title defender Roberta Vinci. The participation of former number one on the world rankings Kim Clijsters, number five on the world rankings Samantha Stosur and Michaëlla Krajicek have already been announced.

Top ten player David Ferrer and the best Dutch tennis player Robin Haase are accompanied by former number one on the world rankings Juan Carlos Ferrero, Jurgen Melzer, Viktor Troicki, and the Belgian players Xavier Malisse and Olivier Rochus. Last year’s finalist Ivan Dodig also joins in and title defender Dmitry Tursunov hopes to move up a few places in the next week and to enter the main draw. Dutch player Igor Sijsling will enter the main tournament by means of a Wild Card.

The players’ list of the UNICEF Open, the international grass tennis tournament that takes place in Rosmalen from 17-23 June 2012, looks very promising. Two players from the worldwide top-5 have now confirmed their participation. Belgian player Kim Clijsters, former number one on the world rankings, is currently playing her last year in the professional tennis circuit. She chooses Rosmalen in order to prepare herself for Wimbledon and the Olympic Games. Number five on the world rankings, Samantha Stosur, is coming to UNICEF Open as well. She will be playing in the Netherlands for the first time in her career. The number one of the Netherlands, Michaëlla Krajicek, will also be playing at the tournament. The winner of the 2006-edition is playing a good season and is motivated to show her best tennis at Rosmalen.

Number five on the ATP world rankings, David Ferrer, returns to Rosmalen as well. He won the tournament in 2008 and would like to equal that result. Best Dutch player Robin Haase, furthermore, is very motivated to present himself in his own country. At least one other Dutch top player will receive a wild card for the tournament.

Dmitry Tursunov clinches UNICEF Open

Dmitry Tursunov won the men singles tournament at UNICEF Open in Rosmalen. The Russian neede only two sets to crack Croatians Ivan Dodig: 6-3, 6-2. In the first set, Tursunov found the way to force a break on his only opportunity. Dodig got three chances, but took none: 6-3.

In the second set, that had been disturbed bij the rainy weather, Dodig couldn't find the form he developed during this tournament. At 2-2, he lost both his service games and saw Tursunov clinch his second grass title: 6-2.

Obviously, the winner was relieved. "It's always hard to play a final, because you are always a little nervouse. I think that I have more experience than Ivan, that's been an advantage today. The circumstances we had to play in were very difficult. I had to play well and I played well, specially on the important points. I hope to do well at Wimbledon as well.

Dodig showed his sportmanship by congratulating his opponent. "I congratulate Dmitry with his win, he played incredible tennis today. I think in the end he was the one that deserved to win this final."

"This was my first time in Holland, I liked it here. Thanks to alle the spectators who came to the matches every day. I hope to be back next year."

Roberta Vinci wins women's title UNICEF Open

zaterdagfinaleb 223Roberta Vinci has won the singles title at UNICEF Open. In three sets, the Italian beat Jelena Dokic from Australia: 6-7 (7), 6-3 en 7-5.

Both players succeeded in playing pretty well, although they suffered the windy weather from time to time. The first set had to be decided in a tiebreak, in which Vinci had chances, but Dokic escaped: 6-7 (7).

In the second set, Vinci took the full advantage of the only breakpoint she got (against not even a single one for her opponent): 6-3. The Italian (ranked WTA-30) kept her nerves together at the end of set three, breaking Dokic at 6-5 to clinch the set, match and title.

"My first grass title", Vinci cheered directly after the match. Also she had some nice words for her opponent, who experienced great form in Rosmalen last week. "You played well also, Jelena."

Vinci promised to come back to Rosmalen next year to defend her title. "For sure. I've had a great week, I like this tournament. Now I'm on my way to Wimbledon. I'm a little tired after this week, but that's ok, you know. I've won, so I'm ready.

Jelena Dokic responded realisticly. "I'm happy with my performance, I've had a good week. Topday was difficult, Vinci played well and the circumstances were pretty hard. But well, that's the way things go sometimes. I'm happy to have reached this far and I'm looking forward to Wimbledon." Also Dokic promised te return in 2012. "Definately, I'va had a great time here. I'd be happy tob e back next year.

Vinci, WTA-30, will receive 11.000 dollars for her victory, as well as 280 WTA-points. Dokic receives $ 5.750 and 200 WTA-points.

Barbora Zahlavova and Klara Zakopalova win

zatfinalea 123Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Klara Zakopalova have won the women's doubles title. The Czech couple won their match against Dominika Cibulkova and Flavia Pennetta in three sets: 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Despite her loss in the final it was a successful edition of the UNICEF Open for Dominika Cibulkova. She played the final in doubles and reached the semifinals in the singles.

The victory in the doubles is the second title for Klara Zakopalova in Rosmalen who won the singles final in 2005. "Of course I will come back next year, it's a nice tournament that I like to play. We are really happy that we have won."
